The history of munnar railway is also the history of British India. Munnar railway also known as Kundala Valley Railway, its constructed on 1902. Munnar railway was the first monorail system used in India.

In 1908, the monorail was replaced by a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow-gauge light railway. Light steam locomotives were used to pull trains to stations at Madupatty and Palaar. That was an effective trasportation system in between Munnar and Top station. From there they bring that all things by conventional systems, like by using man power, bullock cart etc.

In 1924, Munnar faced the worst flood, that ever seen by kerala. It caused the destruction of tea plantations, roads and its also washed out the munnar railway, and the rise up ever come back.
